Synopsis
The story starts in Istanbul and continues to be told in 70s Cukurova, the southern part of Turkey. Zuleyha is a woman, who has simple dreams. Only one she has is her step-brother Veli and her sister-in-law. She has a tailor shop and wants to marry Yilmaz. They both love each other deeply.

Yilmaz is a hardworking man, who works as a car mechanic. After his family passed away long ago, he was raised by his master. Yilmaz does not have a wealthy life but he can do anything to make his lover Zuleyha happy. Zuleyha and Yilmaz want to get married as soon as possible and start their new life together. However, something unexpected happens and they become the victims of fate.
Zuleyha’s step-brother Veli sells hi sister to a crime boss in order to pay back his gambling debt. Unaware of this fact, Zuleyha falls into a trap due to the cruelty of her own family. Yilmaz, on the other hand, commits murder and kills the crime boss in order to save the woman he loves passionately.

After this tragedy, Yilmaz has nothing to do but to run away from Istanbul to survive. He wants to leave Zuleyha to the custody of his master. Yet, Zuleyha is determined not to leave the man she loves. Hence, Yilmaz and Zuleyha give up their hopes and dreams and start on a gruelling escape journey.
In Bitter Lands (Bir Zamanlar Cukurova), we witness the legendary love of Zuleyha and Yilmaz. We see the struggle of their love to overcome all obstacles. Their fate takes them into numerous places under very different situations. They only care for their love and commitment to each other. To be able to win this battle, they fight against the powerful ones, who can do anything to get what they want, with their belief in the power of love.
